Coffee lovers, fitness fans, and busy humans everywhere have discovered the ultimate morning combo: protein coffee. Also known as “proffee,” this trendy drink combines two things many people already rely on (especially me!) — caffeine and protein — into one delicious cup. Protein coffee is more than just a social media trend. It’s a practical, energizing drink that can help fuel workouts, support muscle recovery, and keep you fuller longer while still delivering that glorious coffeehouse flavor we all crave.
So grab your favorite mug and let’s dive into the world of protein coffee.

What Is Protein Coffee?
Other than being one of my favorite ways to drink coffee, protein coffee is exactly what it sounds like: coffee mixed with a protein source. Most people use:
Protein powder
Ready-to-drink protein shakes
Collagen protein
High-protein milk alternatives
The result? A creamy, satisfying drink that gives you the caffeine boost of coffee and the nutritional benefits of protein. This combo drinky-poo is also amazing because it is so hard to hit protein goals, especially women. So being able get a 2 for 1 is honestly the best way to go. Think of it as your morning latte with superhero powers.
Why Is Protein Coffee So Popular?
Protein coffee exploded in popularity because it fits perfectly into modern lifestyles. People want drinks that fit their busy lives, weather you're a busy mom, a business guy on the go, an entrepreneur, a collage student that has a full schedule - they need a coffee that can hit and provide some nutritional support. Think about it, instead of drinking coffee and making breakfast separately, you can just combine both into one easy beverage, and you can always take it on the go, because who has the time to sit around first thing in the morning? Not me... I'm not retired yet, and I'm totally jelly if you are, congrats. Profee hits all the points we need for our on-the-go lives, its quick, convenient, energizing, and delicious! If you follow my instagram, @inspirationalsips, you will see I love drinking my protein coffee very specifically when I go to Costco. Can you imaging going to Costco on an empty stomach or with no energy? It will not end well.
Benefits of Protein Coffee
1. Boosts Energy and Focus

Coffee naturally contains caffeine, which may help improve alertness, concentration, and mood. That morning fog? Protein coffee says, “Not today.”
2. Helps Keep You Full Longer
Adding protein to coffee can help reduce hunger compared to plain coffee alone. That means fewer mid-morning snack attacks and less temptation to raid the cookie drawer before lunch.

3. Supports Muscle Recovery
Protein helps support muscle repair and recovery after exercise. Many fitness enthusiasts enjoy protein coffee after workouts as a quick and tasty recovery drink.
4. Convenient Breakfast Option
Not everyone has time to cook eggs and oatmeal at 6 AM. Protein coffee offers a fast option for busy mornings when life is moving at espresso-shot speed. Mind you, if I am super busy I will just take it on the go but if I have time will combine it with a more balanced breakfast like a cup of oatmeal with fruit or pastry of some sort.
Best Protein Options for Coffee
Not all proteins mix equally well into hot coffee. Here are some popular choices:
Whey Protein
Creamy and rich, whey protein blends well and adds a milkshake-like texture.
Collagen Protein
Collagen dissolves easily and usually has little to no flavor, making it great for hot coffee.
Plant-Based Protein
Perfect for dairy-free coffee lovers. Vanilla and mocha flavors work especially well.
Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes
One of the easiest methods — simply pour your favorite shake into iced coffee.
Tips for the Best Protein Coffee
Avoid clumps, mix protein powder separately before adding to hot coffee. Better yet, use a blender or frother (here is an awesome double coiled one from Amazon). This creates a smooth, café-style texture, the bubbles if you will.
Don’t use boiling coffee, extremely hot coffee can affect the texture of some protein powders. Also, going back to avoiding clumps, too hot can make it chunky.
Better yet, I prefer my protein coffee over ice. For this I basically just get protein with coffee already mixed together. It makes me feel more like I ordered an iced latte from a coffee shop, except its way better because I didn't spend $12 on mostly milk and ice. I will either use a frother or use a blender bottle to mix it all up, and when I'm feeling super fancy, I will blend it with ice in a blender

Check out this stainless steel blender bottle - I've been trying to cut back on plastics, and this is a brilliant way to use what you're familiar with, but better. Put your ingredients and shake, shake, shake!
Choose Quality Protein. A good-tasting protein makes a huge difference. Trust me— chalky protein equals sad coffee. You may need to go through trial and error on this one, but its part of the fun of figuring out your preference.
My favorites:

One of my favorite protein coffee powders is Chike Brand. I first found it at Sam's Club, but have also seen it at Albertson's. On Amazon, there is a variety of flavors I have not seen in stores. Try one, try all, and find your fav!
Ready to drink favorite: Good ol' fashioned Cafe Latte from Premier Protein - This tastes exactly like Dutch Bros protein coffee. Literally, the first time I tried one of their, at the time "new" protein coffees, it tasted exactly like the stuff I typically buy from the grocery store. Why spend $8 at the drive through when you can spend around $2 and an extra 2 minutes for the same experience.
Final Sip
Protein coffee combines the best of both worlds: the comforting magic of coffee and the staying power of protein. Whether you’re headed to the gym, the office, or just trying to survive Monday morning, protein coffee offers a delicious way to fuel your day.
So the next time someone asks if coffee can be productive and delicious, you can confidently answer:
“Yes. Yes it can.”
Now excuse us while we go make another cup. ☕💪
